A greater protection of bluefin tuna
is guaranteed by the unanimous
agreement reached by EU fisheries
ministers meeting in Brussels on
26-27 November.
The aim of the recovery plan for
this species of tuna fish is to make
sure stocks are exploited
sustainably – with a focus on closed
fishing seasons and new minimum
sizes, now to be set at 115cm or
30kg, to reduce the number of fish
caught. The use of helicopters and
planes to locate shoals is also to
be banned.
Health check for the common
agricultural policy (CAP)
Three objectives aimed at improving
the health of the
CAP
were agreed on by ministers meeting
at the Agriculture Council:
- improvement of the single payment
scheme;
- modernisation of agricultural
market management tools;
- meeting the new challenges of
climate change, bioenergy production
and water management.
Duty on cereals to be lifted
Ministers agreed to lift duty on
imported cereals until 30 June 2008,
in the light of unusually high
demand and low supply brought about
by climatic conditions, animal and
human food purchase by emerging
countries and the growth of biofuels.
